Applying to Art High School

Class attendance recommendations for 7/8 grade students applying to an art high school:
2 times per week starting Fall of 7th grade latest. Starting your portfolio later than that will require more class time.

Applying to Art College

Juniors – Start your program as early as you can! We accept students into the program from January 1 to June of the year you are applying. Attendance amount should be based on your portfolio submission due date. If you are a Senior you are no longer qualify to join the regular ongoing portfolio class, but must take private classes (as needed) to put together requirements at the very last moment. You are still eligible for consultations.

For Juniors, we start conducting consultations/interviews starting September of your Sophomore or Junior year. Program starts January 2nd. Space permitting (8-10 students only) we will continue to accept students to the program in the middle of the year until June 15th.

Freshmen and Sophomores — start building your portfolio now at a less vigorous pace. Contact us for your individual plan. Note that the amount of sessions needed for a quality portfolio varies for every student. The supply list will be provided after joining the program.

Master Art Studio is proud to offer a unique undergraduate Preparatory ProgramArt Portfolio Intensive entirely dedicated to building portfolios for highly competitive art high schools and colleges in the United States and Canada, as well as guiding a student when creating artwork for art competitions.

In this rigorous program, our goal is to give students all the necessary tools and skills to create scholarship-worthy portfolios.
What is covered in the program? Details are below:

  • Dedicated personal space reserved for each student for the whole year
  • Work from observation is the main focus of the program for elevating skills to survive and to do well in a competitive art school
  • Conceptual ideas: training on how to come up with and implement unique, creative ideas
  • Various media, including sculpture and installations
  • Understanding space, color, perspective and abstract concepts
  • Learning rigorous work ethic with the ability to work independently during independent studio time (up to 7 days a week), during school operational hours. It teaches students to produce independent work, practice technical skills and meeting deadlines
  • 357+Instructional hours per year (325 minimum, but could be more if needed)
    During the school year(September to mid June): 2 times per week, 3-h class
    Tuesdays 4 pm-7 pm and Sundays 10 am–1 pm (We may switch to Saturdays 10 am–1 pm)
    During the Summer: Mid-June to September (10 weeks): 4 times per week, 3-h class on Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Thursdays 10 am – 1 pm
  • Up to 325+ days per year of Non-Instructional hours. Student must attend the studio during non-instructional hours (when school is opened and sometimes still have the opportunity to ask a question from any teacher on the schedule). Student encouraged try to attend and work independently in creative studio environment as much as possible
  • Individual student/parent progress review – 2 times per year:
    –End of the school year in June
    –Mid September, before the National Portfolio Day
  • Live Nude Model classes fee included in yearly tuition during instructional hours. If attending general “Open Studio” Live nude model with adults – it is additional $10 per 2.5 hours
  • Plain air opportunity on location outside of the school during the Summer
  • Supply list will be provided upfront if you choose to purchase supplies yourself or we can help purchasing them at the additional cost of about $865
  • National “Portfolio Day”readiness (Very important day! Student must schedule appointments ahead of the time with colleges), around beginning to end of October
  • Additional consultation/suggestion on college choice
  • Guidance on choosing a portfolio concentration topic
  • Additional help with “special” projects for extra scholarship money (when applicable by college), “challenge” work/project if required by a specific college
  • Commenting on work description after it is written by the student

If student joins late it may require  private classes to catch up at $250 for a 2-h class

Additional optional services:

Final portfolio should be put together with professional photo taking, great consideration of artwork order “to tell the story” and accompanying description. We offer additional services to make your portfolio look as professional as possible:

  • Professionally photographing artwork (from 15 to 20 pieces), converting to digital format for upload for portfolio day and/or submission to Slideroom
  • Editing artist statement and descriptions for each and every artwork

In order to learn high skill level in 1-2 years time period students entering the program will be committing to a rigorous schedule that will take presidents over other activities, vacations etc. If student chooses to skip a class, he will be missing on instruction that day.
Approximate days off: Passover, Easter, one week in the Summer (will be chosen later), Labor Day, Thanksgiving Day, Christmas.

Art Portfolio Intensive 2022 yearly tuition details are available on request during the consultation. 
1-h consultation fee of $250 will be refunded upon joining the program.
